Rico’s Teaching Style & Ideal Students

Rico’s teaching approach is highly personalized, designed for students who want to sing and play piano/keyboards—together or separately—while developing a deep, holistic understanding of music. He specializes in ear training, contemporary music theory, and songwriting, ensuring that his students don’t just memorize notes but truly understand music. His method is hands-on and adaptable, whether you're a complete beginner or an experienced musician looking to transition from classical to contemporary styles. Rico emphasizes practical musicianship, helping students play confidently by ear, interpret songs creatively, and build the skills necessary for real-world performance.

Rico primarily works with students age 16 and up, including working professionals and seniors who have always wanted to learn music but never had the opportunity. He welcomes those who aspire to perform professionally as well as those learning for personal enjoyment. Since his focus is on contemporary music, his teaching is best suited for those interested in rock, pop, and related genres rather than classical training.

Lessons are available in person at The Domain in North Austin, or virtually for students anywhere in the world. Remote lessons are flexible, with Skype and Google Meet being preferred platforms, though Rico is open to other options. Given his limited availability, students who are committed and motivated to improve will get the most out of his instruction. If you’re ready to take your musical abilities to the next level, Rico is here to guide you every step of the way.
